Showboating vs. the Truth

Back on October 24, 2025, Harry Niska and his law firm filed a lawsuit against the Secretary of State, Steve Simon, on behalf of the Heritage Foundation. The lawsuit alleged that the Secretary of State failed to comply with the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act regarding the Heritage Foundation’s request for voter information.

That’s attention grabbing, isn’t it? Harry standing up and fighting for “us.”

As Paul Harvey would say, “Here’s the rest of the story.”

On April 21, before any litigation even began, Harry submitted a voluntary motion to dismiss.

Why, you ask?

The lawsuit was never served on the Secretary of State. They failed to show proof that the summons and complaint were served on the Secretary of State. So much time and effort was put into gathering headlines and interviews, but it appears that little effort was put into actually moving the lawsuit forward. It was never about the actual lawsuit, it was about the headlines, the interviews, and the political clout there was to gain.

How do we know that?

Did we ever hear a word about what happened after the filing? Did we ever hear a word about the dismissal?

No, and we never will.

Government should never be about building a career. It should never be about headlines and interviews. Government is supposed to be about representing your constituents. It’s about putting your agenda second to what your constituents want and need.

That’s not happening right now.

We have a representative who runs to the cameras and the spotlight. We have a representative who makes sure he’s in the headlines. Here’s what I know about true leadership and representation: it’s about showing up, working hard, doing what’s right, taking blame, and giving credit.

None of that is happening for us now.

I want to be a representative for the entire area. I’ve learned that real solutions come from listening and understanding, not arguing and blaming others.

My goal in St. Paul would be to never be given the spotlight, the headlines, or the interviews. I want to be known as the representative who rolled up his sleeves and actually got the work done without any of that. That’s when I would know that I did it right.
