Patriotisim

Patriotism, patriot, American hero are words that get thrown around a lot lately. It’s usually by one side trying to proclaim themselves as superior. I’m fortunate to have some of the first true American patriots in my family.

My family came to the New World before it was a country. I have two family members who signed the Declaration of Independence according to my family tree. To think about what they fought for is truly amazing. The U.S. Constitution gives us specific rights that are sacred and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Everyone shouts whatever amendment suits their purpose for the moment, but I believe the most significant words in the Constitution are the first three: we the people.

Nowadays, everything has become about the party. As residents of MN SD 31A, we haven’t been able to watch the news this session without hearing our representative talk about party. Just “our caucus this” and “our caucus that”. Not once did I hear him say anything about his constituents, you know the people.

It’s one reason we’re in the situation we find ourselves in today. Everything is partisan, and not wanting the other side to get their win. My question is does it matter whose ideas they are if we the people actually win and get the funds we need to support our schools, to repair our roads and bridges, to provide healthcare?

My promise to each of you is that I will always put we the people first.
